Off-Page SEO: What It Is and How to Build Authority

Off-page SEO is everything that happens away from your website that influences how search engines judge it. Links from other sites are the best-known signal, but brand mentions, reviews, social discussion and press coverage all feed into how trustworthy and popular your business appears. It is the third leg of SEO, alongside technical and on-page work.

Why off-page signals matter

Anyone can write a page claiming to be the best plumber in Leeds. Search engines need outside evidence to decide who to believe. When respected websites link to you, mention you or review you, they are vouching for you in a way you cannot fake on your own pages.

Google’s original breakthrough, PageRank, treated each link as a vote. The system is far more sophisticated today, but the idea survives: earned attention from relevant sources is still one of the strongest ranking signals.

Backlinks: the core of off-page SEO

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Quality beats quantity every time. One link from a respected industry publication can outweigh hundreds from low-quality directories.

What makes a link valuable:

  • Relevance: the linking site covers a related topic.
  • Authority: the site itself has strong links and real traffic.
  • Placement: the link sits in the main content, not a footer or sidebar.
  • Editorial choice: someone chose to link because your page helps their readers.

Some links carry attributes that tell Google not to pass full credit. Our entry on dofollow vs nofollow links explains what each attribute means and why a natural profile includes both.

How to earn links

The full process is covered in our link building guide. The main approaches that still work are:

  • Creating linkable assets such as original research, free tools or definitive guides.
  • Pitching stories and data to journalists through digital PR.
  • Writing useful articles for relevant sites through guest posting.
  • Finding dead links on other sites and offering your page as a replacement.
  • Getting listed by partners, suppliers, associations and local organisations.

Brand mentions and reviews

Unlinked mentions of your brand still count for something, especially as AI systems learn which brands are associated with which topics. A brand that is discussed on forums, podcasts and news sites is more likely to be cited by AI assistants.

For local businesses, reviews are one of the biggest off-page factors. Our guide to online reviews and SEO covers how to earn more of them without breaking platform rules.

Measuring authority

Third-party scores such as Moz’s Domain Authority or Ahrefs’ Domain Rating estimate the strength of a link profile. Google does not use them, but they are handy for comparing sites. Read our entry on domain authority before you put too much weight on any single number.

What to avoid

Buying links, joining link schemes and spamming comments break Google’s spam policies. These tactics belong to black hat SEO and can trigger algorithmic devaluation or a manual action.

If you inherit a site with a history of spammy links, our guide to toxic backlinks and the disavow tool explains when cleanup is worth it and when Google already ignores them.
