AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of many search results, with links to the sources it used. Launched widely in 2024 after the Search Generative Experience trial, they now appear for a large share of informational queries. Getting cited in them is a key goal of generative engine optimisation.
How AI Overviews work
Google’s Gemini model, described in Google’s guide to AI features in Search, reads results from Google’s own index for the query and related sub-queries (a technique Google calls query fan-out), then writes a summary with cited links. Because the sources come from the index, normal ranking signals still matter. Pages that rank well, answer clearly and are trusted are most likely to be cited.
AI Mode
AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience in Google where users ask follow-up questions and receive longer AI answers with links. It uses the same principles: indexed, relevant, trustworthy pages get cited.
How AI Overviews affect traffic
Studies show click-through rates on traditional results fall when an AI Overview appears, especially for simple informational queries. However, pages cited inside the overview can gain visibility, and clicks that do happen are often from more engaged users. Commercial and local queries are less affected than definitions and quick facts.
How to appear in AI Overviews
- Rank well organically. Most citations come from top-ranking pages, though not always the top three.
- Answer questions directly under clear headings, the same way you would aim for featured snippets.
- Cover follow-up questions on the same page so you match fan-out queries.
- Add unique value: data, experience, examples and expert quotes.
- Keep content fresh and accurate.
- Use structured data and clean HTML so content is easy to parse.
- Build brand signals through mentions and reviews.
Can you opt out?
You can use nosnippet or max-snippet directives to limit how much text Google shows, but this also restricts normal snippets and can reduce visibility. Blocking Google-Extended in robots.txt affects Gemini training, not AI Overviews in Search.
Measuring AI Overview visibility
Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode impressions and clicks within normal Performance data but does not separate them. Third-party rank trackers now report which keywords trigger AI Overviews and whether your site is cited.
Frequently asked questions
Do AI Overviews use schema?
Structured data helps Google understand pages but is not required to be cited.
Are AI Overviews the end of SEO?
No. They change which queries send clicks, but they rely on the web and on ranking signals.
