Ecommerce SEO: How to Rank Online Shop Products and Categories

Ecommerce SEO is the process of getting an online shop’s category and product pages to rank in search engines so shoppers find you instead of a marketplace or competitor. It combines every part of SEO with challenges unique to shops: thousands of similar pages, filters, stock changes and manufacturer descriptions.

Keyword research for shops

Target commercial and transactional terms on category pages (“women’s waterproof walking boots”) and specific model terms on product pages (“Brand X Trail GTX women’s size 6”). Informational content (“how to choose walking boots”) supports both. Use long-tail keywords for filters and sub-categories where search demand exists.

Category pages: your biggest opportunity

Category pages often rank for broader, higher-volume terms than individual products. Optimise them with:

  • A clear H1 and title tag targeting the category keyword.
  • A short intro above the products and a helpful buying guide or FAQs below.
  • Links to sub-categories and related categories.
  • Enough products to be useful; merge thin categories.

Product pages

  • Unique descriptions: rewrite manufacturer copy to avoid duplicate content across retailers.
  • Specifications, sizes, materials, care and delivery information.
  • Original photos and video with descriptive alt text.
  • Customer reviews and Q&A, which add fresh, unique content.
  • Product schema with price, availability and ratings for rich results. See schema markup.
  • Merchant Center: submit a product feed for free listings in Google Shopping.

Faceted navigation

Filters for size, colour, price and brand can create millions of URL combinations. Decide which filtered pages have search demand (“red trainers”) and make those indexable with unique titles. Keep the rest out of the index with canonicals, noindex or robots.txt rules to protect crawl budget.

Out-of-stock and discontinued products

  • Temporarily out of stock: keep the page live, show the restock date and alternatives.
  • Permanently discontinued with a replacement: 301 redirect to the new model.
  • Discontinued with no replacement: redirect to the category if relevant, or return a 410 if the page has no value.

Site structure and speed

Keep products within a few clicks of the homepage, use breadcrumbs, and link popular products from category pages and guides. Optimise images and scripts, which are often the main causes of slow shops and poor Core Web Vitals.

Platforms

Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento (Adobe Commerce) and BigCommerce can all rank well. Each has quirks, such as Shopify’s fixed /products/ and /collections/ URL folders and duplicate product paths within collections.
